Since its inception in 2002, Mothers Against Guns has attracted a large number of supporters from all walks of life, united in the belief that action needs to be taken to bring about a change to gun laws. Toby Harris (Lord Harris of Haringey) is an elected member of the London Assembly for the district of Brent and Harrow and is Leader of the Labour Group on the GLA. He is Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority and represents the Authority on the Association of London Government, the Local Government Association, Association of Police Authorities and the London Health Commission. He is a member of the Mayor's Advisory Cabinet.
Toby Harris chaired the Association of London Government from its formation in 1995 until June 2000, having previously chaired the Association of London Authorities from 1993. He was Leader of Haringey Council from 1987 to 1999 and a member of that council from 1978 to 2002.
He has contributed to various publications including The Economics of Prosperity, Energy and Social Policy and co-authored Why vote Labour.
Professionally, he has held key positions in the consumer movement, having been Deputy Director of the Electricity Consumers' Council and Director of the Association of Community Health Councils for England and Wales (the statutory body representing NHS patients) from 1987 to 1998. He is now a Consultant Advisor to KPMG Consulting and a Senior Associate of the King's Fund.
Toby Harris was made a Life Peer in 1998.
